PUBLIC SERVICE IS UNDER ATTACK

Trump's Budget, Breaking Tradition, Seeks Cuts to Service Programs

Public service is under attack. Programs like AmeriCorps and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program are endangered by anti-service politicians who value special interests over opportunities for service here and abroad.

The benefits of service are well known. Service builds character, allows young people to meet and work with diverse groups of people, gives us all a stake in our communities, and can help pay for higher education.

Supporting national service is not a partisan issue. A survey conducted by Republican polling firm TargetPoint found that 83% of voters want Congress to maintain or increase federal spending on national service programs. The strong bipartisan consensus includes support from 78% of Republicans, 84% of Independents and 90% of Democrats.

Economists have found that each dollar invested in national service generates $3.95 in terms of higher earnings, increased output and other community benefits.

HOUSE BUDGET ELIMINATES AMERICORPS

The House of Representatives approved a budget that eliminates the Corporation for National and Community Service, including AmeriCorps.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM TARGETED

Legislation has been introduced to eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program that forgives student loans after the borrower makes payments while working full-time for government organizations at any level, including positions in law enforcement, health care, the military, and teaching.

NO CHIP EXTENSION MEANS NO NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC), a program that offers tax-free loan repayment assistance to those who provide care in rural and other underserved communities, faces elimination following the failure to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
